Wings Over Haiti is a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop mutually beneficial cultural exchanges between students around the world and the Wings Over Haiti School  in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti.

In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, Wings Over Haiti has: built a new school and is providing free education to over 40 students; established learning partnerships with schools throughout the U.S. and Canada; purchased land and developed a community garden; and initiated a system of health and social services for our students and their families.

There is still a lot of work left to be done, and the opportunities for you to get involved are limitless. Teachers should check out our Learning Partnerships link for ideas on how you can involve your students in the Wings Over Haiti School while giving your students the opportunity to master state learning standards in real-world applications!

In Memorium - Jean Elie Cadet

Wings Over Haiti
joins the Cadet family and the Croix-des-Bouquet community in mourning the tragic death of Jean Elie Cadet. Jean Elie passed away on June 17, 2011 due to complications caused by severe malnutrition. He is survived by two loving parents, and eight brothers and sisters. He is remembered as being generous, kind, and respectful. He also had a passion for singing.

Wings Over Haiti first became aware of Jean Elie's serious health problems on our May 2011 trip. After his severe malnutrition was diagnosed by a visiting volunteer doctor, Wings Over Haiti helped Jean Elie's family seek medical attention to treat him. At the same time, we struggled to understand how this could have happened. Our students receive a healthy snack when they arrive at school, and they are fed a hot meal at the end of the morning. In an effort to fully understand the problem, we conducted home visits with all of our families. We were shocked to learn that Jean Elie, who was only five, was taking his food home to share with his starving family. It was impossible to wrap our heads around - to think that a five year old would purposefully starve himself in an attempt to save his family.

Jean Elie's family is by no means alone in their inability to provide food for themselves. Wings Over Haiti understands that in order to educate a child, he/she must be healthy, and this is intricately linked to the health of his/her family. It is for this reason that we are rapidly moving towards increasing the level of support we provide to students' families. We are currently implementing plans to start a "Community Cafe", where we will invite our students and parents to work together as a community to prepare hot, nutritious meals for each other, using food they have grown on our land.

When we took this photo in January 2011, Jean Elie told us he wanted to be a psychologist. Among the children at our school we have those who dream of being a teacher, an astronaut, a writer, a doctor, a singer, and much more. Wings Over Haiti is committed to encouraging these children to dream and to give them the tools to fulfill their dreams, and work towards a better Haiti. Please consider making a donation to Wings Over Haiti in Jean Elie's memory, and so that something like this never happens again.
